There are no "laws" as is in Buddhism. The Buddha indicated that we should live ethically and morally; therefore there are things that should be avoided, since they hinder us from reaching enlightenment. These are called the Five Precepts, which are:

1) Avoid taking the life of any sentient being

2) Avoid taking anything that is not given (no stealing)

3) Avoid sexual misconduct

4) Avoid lying, or any harmful speech.

5) Abstain from taking intoxicants

Mahayana Buddhists have also added a few precepts. These are called the Ten Grand Precepts. The additions to the list above are:

6) Not talking about others' errors and faults

7) Not elevating oneself and blaming others

8) Not being stingy

9) Not being angry

10) Not speaking ill of the Three Treasures

The Precepts are connected to the ethical conduct parts (3, 4 & 5) of what The Buddha called the Eight Fold Path, which is:

1) Right View or Understanding - See and understand things as they really are.

2) Right Intention - Commitment to ethical and mental improvement

3) Right Speech - See precept 4, 6 & 7 and include avoiding idle chatter.

4) Right Action - See precepts 1, 2, 3 and 5.

5) Right Livelihood - Hold a job which does not bring pain, suffering or death

to others.

6) Right Effort / Endeavor - To make the continuous effort to abandon all wrong

or harmful words andactions.

7) Right Mindfulness - To see things with a clear consciousness without our

preconceived notions.

8) Right Concentration - Development of mental concentration, which is an

important aspect of mindfulness.

So if we followed The Buddha's advice we would have a much more peaceful and harmonious existence.

While the specific laws or sutras vary from sect to sect, all forms of Buddhism have one thing in common: meditation.

There are many different meditation techniques, but all of them have one thing in common: they all cause you to become more self-aware, more watchful of your thoughts, feelings and physical sensations.

Some techniques are still: for example, you sit and watch your breath. Others are active, asking you to move, dance, make sounds, etc.

Perhaps the best thing to do is look around at different techniques and find one which "feels right." Then go ahead and try it for a few weeks.

We have no laws, commandments or dogma in Buddhism. The Buddhism asked all his followers to use their common sense and reason and put all of the Buddhas teachings to the test and reject any that were wrong or fruitless. So far no one has proven the Buddha wrong. The Buddha did leave us guidance on how to live our lives. One of the most important is the Five Precepts, which are:

1) Avoid taking the life of any sentient being

2) Avoid taking anything that is not given (no stealing)

3) Avoid sexual misconduct

4) Avoid lying, or any harmful speech.

5) Abstain from taking intoxicants

Some Buddhists also have added another five precepts to the list. These are:

6) Not talking about others' errors and faults

7) Not elevating oneself and blaming others

8) Not being stingy

9) Not being angry

10) Not speaking ill of the Three Treasures (which are the Buddha, The Dharma (teachings) and the Sangha (Spiritual community)
