What's your definition of "major wars"? Declared wars only? Casualties? Duration?
Examples:
1. The US Civil War (aka American Civil War) was the bloodiest US war ever fought (because Americans were killing Americans). However, it was an UN-DECLARED WAR.
2. The Spanish-American War of 1898 was one of the quickest cleanest wars ever fought by the US; less than 500 US dead and lasted only 6 months. So quick and clean, that it was nick-named by the press, as the "Splendid Little War." However, this was a DECLARED WAR.
