I'm going to assume that you are NOT a US citizen, because anyone living here would know that there's no such thing as an "average" American or even "a majority."
So, let's take a crack at this from a statistics point of view. As of the date of this writing, the "average" American is white, middle class earning the average gross wage of in 2010 of $41,673.83 per year, Protestant, living in their personally owned residence, no college degree, watches ~5 hours of TV a day, does not read a newspaper or magazine, is pretty uninterested in news and events outside the US (often not interested in news and events outside his/her local area), has limited savings and investments, and drives a vehicle at least 2 years old (and keeps their vehicle an average of seven years). If old enough, is married or will be married sometime in their adult life and, more likely than not, divorced at least once in their adult life.
Beyond that, the majority of people in the US are like everywhere else in the world - some bad, most are good, kind people. Generally hardworking with a few slugs trying to get through life at some else's expense. Most Americans are trying to make a living, provide for themselves and their families, keep out of trouble and not be a bother to anyone else, except for being incredibly naive and/or simplistic about foreigners.
Americans are generally problem solvers. "Solve the problem and move on to the next issue" generally seems to be an abiding philosophy here. The majority of Americans like applying technology to solving problems, but are not as "tech crazy" as some other countries (like the Japanese, for example) appear to be. "Cost effective" is another catch phrase often used here.
Confused? Unsatisfied with this answer? Well, welcome to the club! Americans argue among themselves as to what "the majority" wants, needs, thinks or feels.

Majority rule refers to the facet of democracy that allows what the most people want to occur. This is the basis for our voting system in the US. However, if the wants of the majority infringe upon the rights of people in the minority, the majority may have to make concessions.
