In order of damage or threat to property and human life the most common natural disasters found in North America are usually listed in the following order: # Flash flooding is the most common of the natural disasters to be found in North America. They can come up suddenly and seemingly from nowhere (due to mountain rains or melts far upstream or levee breaks). According to federal reports made in 2008 approximately 140 Americans die each year due to drowning or crushing injuries in a flash flood. # Second most damaging and dangerous to life and property are lightening strikes due to the resultant fires, especially during dry seasons. # Next is tornadoes and the extremely high winds they produce. Tornadoes are categorized as levels 1-5 with 5 being the most catastrophic The higher the level the rarer the tornado. Most tornadoes in North America happen in open rural country and rarely cause damage. But, since early warning is not always possible, when they hit populated areas they make leading news. # Hurricanes ("Cyclone" to South Asia and "Typhoon" in the Pacific) cause most of their damage from tidal flooding, high wind damage and spawning tornadoes (in that order). They are big, but rare and, with today's technology, can be planned for to allow most people to evacuate a given area in time. A hurricane is any tropical storm that has sustained winds of at least 75 miles per hour. Most human injuries or deaths are due to refusing to heed evacuation advisories. # Mud/Rock slides are not so common but do occur in hilly or mountainous regions, especially where homes or businesses have unwisely built either upon ancient alluvial fans (runoff deposits) or into/upon unstable hillsides. # Avalanches are a winter phenomenon that usually effect only the unwary or foolish that fail to heed back country trails or ski slope warnings of such possible snow conditions. Most avalanche prone areas have avalanche "cannon experts" that take preemptive measures with well-placed explosives to force an avalanche to occur early while it is still small and long before it gets big or heavy enough to cause structural damage or death below the slopes upon which they usually occur. # Lastly are damaging earthquakes(roughly any tremor greater than 5.5 on the Richter scale) are rather rare in North America and thus make big headlines when they occur. As with tornadoes most are never even noticed by humans unless reported on the news. Earthquakes themselves are actually relatively harmless. Thus the adage: "Earthquakes don't kill people, buildings in earthquakes kill people." Injuries or deaths occur from man made structures collapsing upon people. The most dangerous structures in even a small earthquake are brick and masonry buildings. Most reported (and famous) earthquakes occur in California. However, some of the biggest earthquakes in American history have and may yet occur in the Midwest (Madrid, MO) and the east coast (e.g. New York and Charleston, SC).
