In my opinion it's not about complexity, it would get complex if you approach the atom as infinite, beyond quarks and realize everyparticle has mass, so gravity.

Atoms model is fairly simple as far we now can tell (till quarks), the number of protons makes up the elemental structure. see Periodic Table of elements
