Do you mean hybrid or full electric?
At the moment every day ordinary electric cars like the recent Nissan leaf with its quoted range by Nissan of 160 km ( 100 mil) has shown great promise in the east particularly its home origins in Japan and some other Asian continents as well as in the west particularly North America, where highway mileage is mostly the norm for many drivers commuting to work or for everyday use. Also in California due to the worry about build up of smog in the environment, the need for full electric cars and their technology is quite high.
However they are not as practical for lets say Europe and specifically the UK, as there is not a current market for full electric cars due to the lack of sufficient infrastructure for electric cars to become useful. In Japan and the US however i would estimate they are probably at least ten years or so ahead of the UK and Europe in electric car technology and infrastructure. As a result cars like the Prius are very popular all round as they only drive on an electric motor for a certain range, without having the need to charge for hours on end and deal with all that electrical blah which is far more complex.
I would hands down say that the Tesla model s is a popular electric car due to its excellent range and economy, however at prices from roughly 50,000 (base model) to 100,000 (top of the range) us dollars it means that it is not widely practical for many modest people like those who by a Prius to afford a car of this nature, as at the end of the day cars are only popular once the consumer's have a demand for it.
So in conclusion, the answer to your question is that although electric cars work well as mentioned in certain continents like Japan and North America, for everyone to use it as a every day source for commuting is impractical at the moment. The only way i can see there being a demand for it is if car manufacturers followed the suit of companies like Toyota and subsidized their prices to make them affordable in order to build a demand for electric and hybrid vehicles.
