ancient Rome did not have hotels as we know them today. If one were coming to the city, he would stay with friends. If a person was a diplomat, he would stay in a house rented by his country. If someone were in the city on military matters, the army would house him. Some bars or taverns would have rooms to rent out. However outside of the city, there were rest stations or "mansios" which many times had rooms for overnight travelers. In the outlying districts and towns there is evidence of large buildings with courtyards which some archaeologists think may have been used as hotels.
