Strathclyde was a Brythonic kingdom that controlled most of southwest Scotland. Another large one was Dal Riata which was a Gaelic kingdom from the 7th century that also held part of Ulster in Ireland. Scotland formed quickly with the merger of many small Pictish clans to repel the Romans and so were unified just as their written history began. They were, however, at one time called Pictland by the English.
