the battle of midway was fought by mainly air, partly sea, and no land. The US had planes station on Midway, but no actual fighting took place on land. It was mainly a battle of air craft carrier based air planes bombing the enemies ships.
The Battle of Midway was one of the largest fought at the time, involving over 200 ships of both the U.S. Navy and Japanese Navy. It was not the largest naval battle of the war, however. The largest was the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October, 1944.
The first naval battle fought entirely by aircraft, and in which the opposing ships of each side never came within sight of each other, was the Battle of the Coral Sea in May, 1942, one month prior to the Battle of Midway.
