A state nick name is a short phrase that describes something about that state. It may be an official symbol for the state. Nick names may be found on the state license plates, either official or an unofficial nick name, usually related to advertising.

Alaska does not have an Official (or even a noteworthy unofficial) State Beverage.
The Netherlands have no official state flower, though the unofficial one is the tulip.

Ireland has no official floral emblem, though it does have an unofficial one. Its unofficial national flower is the shamrock or trefoil.
Tasmania does not have any official state mammal. The Tasmanian devil is the unofficial state mammal of Tasmania.
Although Tasmania did not originally have an official faunal emblem, on 31 May 2915, it was announced that the Tasmanian Devil had been given the status of the state's official animal emblem. The Yellow Wattlebird, which is endemic to the state, is regarded as the unofficial avian emblem.
The "Flickertail State" and the "Roughrider State" were both submitted to the state legislature to become official nicknames, but were both defeated. "Roughrider Country" has been used in North Dakota tourism promotions as has "North Dakota Legendary".
England has two state flowers. One is official; the other is unofficial. The official one is the Tudor rose. The unofficial rose is the red rose.
The official nickname is "Hoosier State". Unofficial nicknames include "Crossroads of America" and "Hospitality State". Pretty cool!! :)
