The original Windows OS was either Windows 1.0, released in 1985 or Windows NT released in 1992.
Windows 1.0 is sometimes not considered an actual operating system because it ran inside of MS-DOS as its own executable file. However, it did provide many operating system like features, such as device drivers, virtual memory, (co-operative) multitasking and demand-loading of executable code/static data.
Windows NT was its own stand alone Operating System and did not depend upon MS-DOS. In fact, MS-DOS ran inside of Windows NT as a virtual machine! Windows NT was the first operating system to provide "preemptive multitasking" - where the operating system is able to take away a program's control of the CPU against its will so that another program can execute.
Windows 95, though still dependent upon MS-DOS as a boot-loader, was closer to a bona fide operating system than Windows 1.0 - but alas, as its name suggests it was released in 1995, thus making it newer than NT.
Mac OS, Released in 1984 Soon followed by Windows 1.0 released in 1985
Nope... it's an 'upgrade' of the original version of Windows (version 1.0) !.. All subsequent versions are upgrades - not original programs.
The "latest" OS released by Microsoft is Windows Server 2008. The latest USER operating system is Vista.
The first versions of the Macintosh operating system were released on 1984, while the first version of Windows was released in 1985. The first systems with architectures resembling modern versions of Mac OS and Windows were Mac OS X v 10.0, released in 2001, and Windows NT 3.1, released in 1993.
Windows XP is an example of an OS. Windows Vista is an example of an OS. Windows 7 is an example of an OS. Mac OS X is an example of an OS.
Windows 95 was released in August of 1995. It was a giant innovation compared to the previous Windows OS, Windows 3.1 and 3.11.
There are several differences between the original Mac OS and windows. Two of these differences include the fact that Widows was susceptible to viruses while Mac was not, and the MAC did not have menus in their windows. You could close a window and have the application still run. Windows had menus on each window and when the window was closed, the application stopped.
