Equites - these were basic cavalry units.
Velites - light infantry, usually poorer soldiers (since legionnaires had to provide their own equipment).
Hastati - heavy infantry with little experience.
Principes - experienced heavy infantry of men in their prime.
Triarii - veteran soldier that were held in reserve.
