The sporadic wars between Greek city-states and the Persian empire ran from 499 to 449 BCE. They began with the Ionian War, then there were invasions and counter invasions for 50 years, all of which do not neatly fit into three wars.

There was one Persian War, continuously from 499 to 449 BCE. Different groups of Greek city-states participated at different stages. Some people like to divide it into two or three wars, depending on taste.
Athens converted the alliance it led in thee later stages of the Persian War into an empire of its own, and, becoming over-confident, intervened in the affairs of Greek city-states outside its empire. The Peloponnesian League, led by Sparta, resisted this iterference and war broke out.
