Zombies will attack anyone who is not a zombie. In this case the infection is an extreme variant of rabies, which causes violent behaviour in order to spread itself through fuids such as saliva.
Should you play L4D before you play L4D2?
no because as far as I know the stories are not connected except for the zombies of course the charicters are different and it set in a different place so that's it
