The main functions of the urinary system are:

-filters blood plasma (eliminates waste) (returns useful substances to blood)

-Regulates blood volume and pressure

-Secretes rennin to control blood pressure

-Secretes erythropoetin for RBC production

-Functions with lungs to control PCO2 and thus acid-base balance

-Role in synthesizing Vitamin D (calcitriol) to control calcium levels

-Detoxifies free radicals and drugs

-Gluconeogenisis, synthesize glucose from proteins in times of starvation
The urinary system is made of two kidneys (left and right), ureters and bladder. The two kidneys contain a medulla and a cortex. It has, inside it, glomeruli which branches from the renal artery. Glomerulus is a capillary which is repeatedly coiled making a vessel know. Each is surrounded by a Bowman's capsule, where ultrafiltration occurs. Due to the pressure, the water, salts etc goes into the bowman's capsule from the glomerulus. Then the needed substances such as salts are reabsorbed back through the renal vein. The other contents collect in the collecting duct and passes into the ureter. Each ureter leads to a muscular bladder, which releases urine only when the pyloric spinhcter relaxes.

2. Maintain acid-base balance

3. Secrete waste products

4. Eliminate urine from bladder 1. Excretion

4. Eliminate urine from bladder

Kidney:Purifies water and filters urine.

Ureter:Passage way to the bladder.

Bladder:Stores urine.

Sphincter:It is made of skeletal muscle and prevents overflow of urine.

The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra. The kidneys filter the blood to remove wastes and produce urine. The ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra together form the urinary tract, which acts as a Plumbing system to drain urine from the kidneys, store it, and then release it during urination. Besides filtering and eliminating wastes from the body, the urinary system also maintains the homeostasis of water, ions, pH, blood pressure, calcium and red blood cells.

The purpose of the urinary system is to eliminate waste from the body, regulate blood volume and blood pressure, control levels of electrolytes and metabolites, and regulate blood pH. The kidneys have an extensive blood supply via the renal arteries which leave the kidneys via the renal vein.
