The symbol of Baphomet is a complex one with numerous parts with symbolic significance. It has the body of a human, the head of a goat, and the wings of a bird to represent the union of body, mind, and spirit. It has a pentacle on its forehead with the point up showing the triumph of spirit of the physical, and also has a torch on its head representing enlightenment. In its lap is a caduceus representing the balance and union of opposites, and representing the genitals of the male phalus and female yoni, making the figure androgynous. Its right arm is raised to the sky and has "solve" (meaning dissolve in Latin) written on it, and its left arm is pointed to the ground with "coagula" (meaning coagulate) showing the process of the alchemist, seperating and recombining, as well as referring to the dictum "as above, so below". It is seated with its legs crossed, balanced on a stone, showing that it is at peace and passive.
The Satanic baphomet draws from this same symbol for the goat head, but it is circumscribed with an inverted pentagram, showing the emphasis on the physical and carnal, with the Hebrew letters L-V-Y-Th-N, Leviathan, the beast of the sea written around the whole thing in another circle.
