Thailand as we know it today did not really exist until in relatively recent history. The territory of present-day Thailand was ruled by a number minor kings based in city-states (e.g., Chiang Rai and the Lan Na Kingdom). Bangkok's power grew (during the early 1800s) as Burma's power in the are vaned. Bangkok gradually forced other city states to become vassal kingdoms and also gained territory by pushin back the weakening Lane Chiang Kingdom.

∙ 10y agoThe first capital of Thailand (Siam) was at Sukhothai during the Sukothai rule, and then at Ayutthaya. Its conquest by Burma meant moving the capital to Thon Buri (just across the river from Bangkok) in 1767. In 1782, Bangkok became the capital.
