Have a little think on it. You need the equipment to convert the Sun's light energy into electrical energy - and only electricity. What of the materials needed: the rare-earth compounds of the photo-voltaic cells themselves, the metals and plastics (the latter from crude-oil derivatives) used in the array frames, control-electronics, wiring, etc.? Where do these come from? How are they sourced, processed, transported, installed? What happens when an array comes to the end of its life (perhaps 25 years) - what of its materials other than the metals are re-useable, and what energy-forms and fuels are needed there? Yes, sun-light is free - but while the direct conversion from light to electricity is non-polluting, overall, solar-power is by no means free either financially or environmentally.
