What are the possible reasons for a Maxima 2000 'check engine' light coming on?

There are several reasons the Check Engine light comes on. It could be as simple as making sure the gas cap is properly screwed on in which case the light will reset itself soon after. It could be the thermostat issues, MAF sensors, switches etc. If the light stays on permanently, you should take it to a repair shop to get the engine diagnosis done and they will tell you exactly what the problem is.
