Counselling should not be used to deal with real mental illnesses or personality disorders. For example, counselling is not suitable for handling sociopaths or paranoia (in the strict, medical sense) or schizophrenia. Problems of this kind need to be attended to by a psychiatrist. ANSWER ADD ON In most cases counselling can handle simple or types of issues that are not very complex. It is very difficult for someone who is unfamiliar with mental health or other dependancy issues. There is also the border of determining when you have crossed it professionally. Are you willing to give up the counsellor/patient relationship?
