First off, it's not just the Ganges, it's the Brahmaputra as well. Bangladesh lies on an area of very low ground, (80% of it is between -1-5 metres above sea level) this means that when other countries experience heavy rainfall it floods heavily, and even more so when India and Tibet (the source countries of the rivers respectively) flood at the same time.
