People. It used to be hunting. Now we're killing the whale's food (krill) with a combination of overfishing and warming the planet. People catch about 200,000 tons of krill per year. As if catching all the krill isn't bad enough, climate change is melting sea ice, which is where the krill's food lives. So, a warming ocean kills off marine algae, which means that krill numbers drop, which means that blue whale numbers drop.

Fishing, in itself, does not cause a problem. Irresponsible and overfishing may do so.
Is fish oil or krill oil better?
It was originally believed that fish oil is better than krill oil. It has now been proven that krill oil is at least 3 times better for you than fish oil. Advertisements for krill oil are now being run on TV. The main problem with this is that the numbers of krill are rapidly decreasing due to two problems. 1, global warming is melting ice which contains an algae that krill eat for their main source of food. 2, overfishing of krill because it is more nutritious than fish oil. If krill become an extinct species it will be extremely bad for the marine environment. Krill are whales main source of food and the same with many other marine animals. Squid, seals and other animals rely on krill and without them animals will have to start eating other creatures like fish and squid leaving them extinct too. With none of these animals left the only things left will basically be plankton and not many animals eat plankton because it is so minute. Whales are the main predators of plankton. Although krill oil is better for you it is not a good idea to buy it because it will be a major problem for the marine environment.
