The main problem is stock control. Do you have the space and money to buy and hold a working stock of every spare part you may need where they may not be used and possibly go out of date? Or, do you use Just-in-Time stock keeping where stock is not held but ordered in as requires. The advantage of Just in Time is that you don't need the space and floating capital to hold any stock but the major disadvantage is that if a customer requires something quick, you wont have it and he will look somewhere else.
Just-in-time was invented in Japan by the car industry.
Another problem is called configuration management or version control. Loads of people have a Ford focus but the car has adapted through the years and some parts are now obsolete. If someone comes in with a 2001 ford focus - what versions of parts are required for that model?
