Population control and animal health.

Hunting season and hunting licenses help to reduce the population of game animals in areas where natural predators are rare. If this didn't occur, many of these animals would likely starve to death in the winter since food is scarce and the environment couldn't support such large numbers. Certain states allow a hunter to shoot more than one animal, this is because those areas have more of those animals than other areas. If, by chance, this were to change, so would the number of animals a hunter may kill.

In some cases, animal populations may also be culled in the event of an outbreak of a disease.

Culls which serve to improve the genetics or health of a group of animals can be a positive thing. Culls can also be a positive management option when they are performed to prevent starvation of a population due to overpopulation. All too often, culls are performed in order to reduce the sheer numbers of animals that have grown so abundant that they are interfering with human interests.
