When I first went to college/university, it was in a new town where I didn't know anyone and i didn't know my way around. So, one of the major pros of getting a dormitory in your first year is that you have a home base where you can meet new people and since it's usually on campus, you won't have to leave if you don't want to. Another pro of dorm life is that there is usually some sort of meal plan included in the price of the room. I also liked the fact that there was always someone there (the residence assistant) that you could ask questions or talk to if you were stressed out. You don't get that off campus. However, if you decide to go into a dorm, you will usually have roommates, and sometimes by the end of the year, you will end up on bad terms with the person you lived with. Another con of dorm life is that the price is NOT included in tuition and that it is usually far more expensive than getting an apartment. A third thing is that you will have to worry about paying your bills on time rather than paying everything for the year up front, and you will also have to worry about buying food and cooking your own meals rather than eating in the university cafeteria where the food is prepared for you and paid for in your meal plan. Where I have been, the meal plan was mandatory and expensive, another thing that could be considered a con. I would recommend living in a dorm your first year, especially if you are far from home and don't really know the area or any people. It's a great way to meet new friends and adjust to university/college life before moving out on your own into an apartment.
