X-rays are made with electromagnetic radiation that uses high energy to look through objects. Organs and tissues are soft and the x ray sees right through it, but it cant see through bones and teeth so it makes a picture of those.

Dentists use x-rays to look for caries (cavities), evaluate the bone level, look for pathology, evaluate eruption of teeth in children, evaluate the wisdom teeth, look at anatomical concerns (for example nerve location compared to a proposed implant site) and to check for any anomalies or dental related problems.

They provide a concrete "picture" (record) of what is going on at a point in time.

If x-rays from previous visits are available, they can provide a timeline to evaluate changes in lesions or to see how things like bone level has changed (or not changed) over time.

They are an invaluable diagnostic tool that often provides information that can't be found with other tests.

They can also be used in making insurance claims, for medical-legal cases, and for identification of deceased.

The main purposes are to provide the dentist with information on cavities and how your tooth is rooted in the gums. It can provide valuable information like whether or not someone needs to have a wisdom tooth pulled.
