Major Morris says that a fakir from India had given him the paw. He says that the reason for the paw containing magic powers was that before he got the paw, the paw had been used by three other people whose wishes came rue, in which the third person wished such a thing that he died. After that Morris received the paw. He considered the monkey's paw to be a curse because it did behold magical powers to fulfil people's wishes, but when someone wished for something, it fulfilled the wish in a very dreadful manner.
