People often accept a totalitarian government for a number of reasons. Firstly, a nation can find itself under a totalitarian government incrementally. In these cases, a government slowly erodes the liberties of the society and moves towards totalitarianism. Germany in the 1930s is an example of this. Another reason is that the people simply cannot do anything about a totalitarian government. One of the key properties of a totalitarian government is the repression of the population by the government, thus making it very hazardous to so much as speak out against the regime.

I believe that people accept it because:

* We have a large number of 'systems' at play simultaneously

** Each system is very complex and varies by geography, socio-class, etc...

** We may not be aware of most of them until circumstance (what ever it may be) brings it to our attention

* The media (is all its forms) has various words and pitures telling the same story different times

** serious stuff is mixed with non-serious stuff

** Serious stuff is sometimes made light, and vice-versa

In questioning this amongst our non-anonymous peers may make us seem a little out-of-place

Lets take oil prices as a THEORETICAL EXAMPLE... oil has risen in price over the years. We have been told many times that various unions, organizations, government bodies, etc... are in charge of 'ensuring' that our standard of living (generally) we will not be affected by these pricing movements, however, the stories and the practice over the timespan of even this one measly issue has been distilled into us in so many different various ways, that now... almost no matter what, when we need petrol we get some, be it $0.50, $1.50, $2.00, $4.00 per litre/gallon.. if the price dropped 10c per litre it would have little impact on our daily life as if it were 10c higer (i mean in general westernised societies).

Mix this with all the other issues we deal with on a personal level, when we watch the news, when we see violence as entertainment, 'wars' happening around the place, having a home, bills, phones, technology, things that interest us, time for socialising, etc... it may be alot easier for most people to 'accept' it and let things be as they are!!!

What are the two problems of government authority?

The two main problems with Government Authorities are: (1) Authority is not good at getting things to the people who need them most or will value them most that is, it does not allocate optimally, and (2) there is a lack of incentives to encourage authority-based policy to use resources as efficiently as they might be used. Regarding the first of these problems, it stands to reason that if government officials make a choice on behalf of all the people, it is difficult for them to take into account the infinitely varying needs of those people. They might write a thousand exceptions and special conditions into their decision, but it would still be a clumsy instrument for deciding who is to get how much of what.
