(see related link below) Updated: Sun Jul. 06 2008 19:38:08 ctvcalgary.ca Wicked weather tore through southern Alberta Sunday afternoon. A number of CTV viewers called our newsroom after seeing a tornado touch down approximately 5 km north of Airdrie around 4:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Airdrie resident Jana Bienz told CTV News she grabbed her camera when she saw some intense clouds building, "Then I saw what looked like a finger coming out of the clouds. The tornado touched down in a farmer's field. It kicked up dirt for about a minute then it went back up and headed east. There were cars on the road. They all stopped to wait for the tornado to go away." Environment Canada has confirmed a tornado touched down in that area and then headed east towards Acme and Beiseker. A Tornado warning was issued just before 5 p.m. for the M.D. of Rockyview, which includes Airdrie. Warnings are not issued until after a tornado occurs. Meantime, a number of weather watches and warnings were issued for southern Alberta. There have been no reports of injuries or damage from the tornado. CTV News has a crew in the area where the tornado touched down and will have video of it happening on the news at 11:30 p.m. For the latest information on weather watches and warnings, click on the link to Environment Canada's website.

Yes, South Dakota is considered to be part of Tornado Alley, a region in the central United States known for frequent tornado activity due to the collision of warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico with cool, dry air from Canada. Tornadoes are not as common in South Dakota as they are in states like Oklahoma and Texas, but the state still experiences its fair share of severe weather.
