The kingdom Protista is basically "catch-all" type of category for scientists, meaning any eukaryotic organism that can not be classified as either a fungus, animal, or plant is generally classified as a protist, making the kingdom Protista extremely diverse.

The kingdom protista contains organisms that are unicellular eukaryotes not classified as plants, animals, fungi or bacteria. The kingdom protista contains varieties of eukaryotic organisms, some single celled, some multicellular, and still others live in a colony of cells. For instance, the Kingdom Protista contains the groups of organisms that are one-celled protozoa, one-celled algae, slime molds and water molds. Examples are amoeba, diatom, paramecium, rotifer, and euglena.

Kingdom Protista is now a defunct taxon. The reason for this was because it was a wastebasket taxon, i.e. the one thing its members had in common was that they didn't fit anywhere else. As such, it's incredibly difficult to point to any "average" protist, as there would be others in the group that are nothing like them. Kingdom Protista was recently dissolved into several kingdoms that have traits in common, including Amoebozoa, Rhizaria, and Excavata.

If forced to give a "type specimen", I'd have to go with the green euglena Euglena viridis. It shows such a mix of plant-like (cell wall, chloroplasts) and animal-like (eyespot, self-locomotion) traits that, in the nineteenth century, German biologist Ernst Haeckel created Kingdom Protista because it wouldn't fit anywhere else nicely.
