To function on a LAN, the user needs:

  1. An IP address
  2. A subnet mask

These settings are required to participate on an LAN segment. If you want to get packets outside of your LAN you will need to add the default gateway address, and if you want to use names instead of IP addresses to get anywhere you will also need the DNS server address(es).

Network Operating system or NOS is an OS that allows a system to connect to a network. Such as Novell and Artisoft's LANtastic. In the old days of DOS networking was not a function of the Client OS, you have to also load the NOS to get connected. Now that most Client OS's imbed network connectivity the term is now seldom used.

I don't believe that is a true statement. Client server networks provide a function of security and data resource sharing. An intranet is just a private, internal network primarily used by employees of a company, or a network that keeps its information internally. Even in an intranet you still have a client server relationship within the network.
