There are exceptions for every rule; and military standards are adjusted to meet the needs of the service; it's almost always been that way...and until the military no longer remains a traditional military, it will most likely always be that way. A recruiter will have the current requirements of a serviceman, it's his job to know them; he cannot recruit men if he doesn't know the requirements. However, here's the general traditional requirements: 1. Height in proper proportion to weight. 2. Eye sight 20/20 or correctible to 20/20. 3. Based upon the needs of the service; color blindness is acceptable. 4. Based upon the needs of the service; no felony convictions. Pardons/and reversals are acceptable. 5. Medical condition: Based upon the needs of the service; certain MOS's (jobs-Military Occupational Specialties) might be waived. Sometimes referred to as "Re-classed", for reclassification. The military is a family, they bend over backwards to take care of their people...they will seldom turn a person out to starve; unless that person hates the service so much that they want out. Then the service will grant their wish, and let them leave; and 8 or 9 out 10 people will miss the service when they finally leave it. They never appreciate something...until it's gone. 6. Based upon the needs of the service: a high school diploma or GED, or HS equivalent. 7. Advice: Know what you're getting into: The US Marines are "Naval Infantrymen." They are a "Corps" of the US Navy. Their full title is US Marine CORPS. Just like the US Air Force used to be a CORPS of the US Army in WW2 (US Army Air Corps). Unlike traditional infantrymen, MARINEs must be able to perform sea duty (sea-sickness might be part of the job). Marines are also a form of "Shock Troops", they must assault objectives that can be near suicide (WW2-Iwo Jima, tarawa, etc.). Whereas Army personnel will soften an objective up until it's darn near safe enough to assault, MARINES may not wait for such a preparation (due to time-table constraints/lack of gunfire support, etc.) and make the assault NOW! Consequently, the Marines have traditionally trained their men harder, making them tougher when it comes time to fight battles. The US Marines have traditionally been some of the toughest fighting men produced by any nation, but their casualties upon battlefields reflect their aggressiveness. When you absolutely have to destroy an enemy, you call in the Marines. So, for number 7; be in good shape, pace yourself, don't push...pace; to avoid injury in boot camp training.
