The Guru Granth Sahib is a living Guru and must be treated with respect. The Guru Granth Sahib is carried over ones head as a sign of respect. A Guru Granth Sahib usually has a bedroom or resting area in any Gurdwara. If a Guru Granth Sahib is kept at home it must be placed in the highest room in a house. It would be totally unacceptable to find a Guru Granth Sahib in a library for example. Hope this helps
First of all, the Guru Granth Sahib is an incredibly sacred document. It's not just a recording of the teachings of the ten Sikh gurus, it is treated as a guru. There are very specific rules regarding where this book is kept. First of all, it must be in it's own room. It must be placed on a Manji Sahib (a bed-like throne) of very specific dimensions and covered with a canopy. It must be covered with a cloth (I believe the type of cloth to be used varies with the seasons. The Guru Granth Sahib must be next to a Chaur Sahib (a clump of artificial hair that fans over the guru) and a platform for sacramental offerings and food, called a Karah Parshad. This is not something the average person can provide in their home. Also, the Guru Granth Sahib is a rather large text. Before the middle of the nineteenth century, every copy was handwritten, so it makes sense that there wouldn't be enough copies for every Sikh home. Though it is mass produced using printing presses now, it's sale is closely regulated by the Sikh's official religious body based in Amritsar, a district in northwestern India. There are also strict procedures that must be followed when transporting the document. This is an enormous amount of trouble to go through, and most homes just can't accommodate the environmental requirements of the Guru Granth Sahib.
The Guru Granth Sahib ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ or Adi Granth is the final Guru of the Sikhs. It has 1430 angs or pages which is composed during the period of Sikh Gurus from 1469 to 1708. It is a collection of shabad or hymms which describes the qualities of God and why one should meditate on God's Name. Guru Gobind Singh (1666 - 1708), the tenth of the Sikh Guru, affirmed the sacred text Dasam Granth as his successor and elevating the book to Guru Granth Sahib. The text remained the holy scripture of the Sikhs, regarded as the teaching of the Ten Gurus. The role of the Adi Granth, as a source or guide of prayer is pivotal in Sikhism.
Because it pays for the upkeep of the gurudawara the home of the guru as well as the langar the free dining area sikhism is an exceptional religion in that it has a martial code which defends its own as well as others rights to worship as they see fit although not necessarily agree with them
If this question is about SIKHISM as it is actually called in India, then the temple is called 'GURUDWARA' or 'GURUDUARA' which literally means the home of the guru (master). In Sikh History there had been ten GURUs starting from GURU NANAK DEV JI. However as per the faith the foremost GURU is "GURU GRANTH SAHIB" which is the Holy Book of Sikhs and is placed, worshiped and recited - on the altars of all Gurudwaras in place of the Deity.

it is the room were the Guru Granth Sahib is in. In that room you have to have your head covered and no shoes. That shows respect to the holy book. After, you may go down to the langer hall and get home made FREE food. Believe me I'm a Sikh so I go to the Gurwara every Sunday. Hope this helps!
People take their shoes off as a sign of respect in Sikh Temples (Gurudwaras.) They also take off their socks as socks are also like shoes, as they carry dirt. The last thing they do to show respect is cover their heads.

After the 10th guru I believe, the following guru became the holy book itself. It is awoke, put to bed, fed, prayed to, and even worshiped. Every Sikh home has a room dedicated to the guru, and treats it like part of the family
