Basically, the responsibilities are to keep each and every child safe while they are in your care. After that, you would run the classroom as the teacher might by following the lesson plan, setting the children to work and helping them do the classwork as best you can. Harry K Wong has some good books on the topic that are helpful. Tricks that I learned along the way were to greet the students as they came into the class, one by one, write my name and the assignment on the board, explain the assignment as best I could...and then take roll. Do this by asking a class member to help. Do not call out roll. Before the end of class, go over the assignment and see if you can help with any trouble spots with class discussion. Allow the kids some time to quietly chat the last 5 minutes (offering this at the beginning as an incentive often works). As always, the way the teacher runs the class normally will carry over to the days you are there with them.
