Since the men were often away, the women took care of the village and had more say over an estate than their husbands.

If the man died, his property was hers first and would only pass on to their sons if she died.

Roles of Women; the Viking women had the most rights then any women in Europe at that particular time, they were born learning how to take care of themselves, animals and how to weave clothes for their family. Viking women were married normally by family arrangement , and between the ages of 13-16 they were in charge of the house hold when the man of the house was somewhere else. They were in charge of the animals if the family had any as well as providing food for the whole family and also providing clothes for the family, to which involved the women weaving materials to make clothes. Viking women had the right to divorce there husband with a witness attending. They were only permitted to divorce if they felt the man was being lazy or was a threat to the wife and or the children.

Men during the Viking age were generally farmers. They took care of the work on the land, tended to the animals and oversaw the thralls. They also defended their home, defended the honor of his family, and was expected to be an honorable member of the society, attending the Thing and Althing.
