While gathering flowers in a field one day, Persephone (daughter of Zeus and Demeter) was abducted to the Underworld by Hades, who arose in his chariot from a fissure in the ground. Demeter, goddess of the harvest, was heartbroken, and while she wandered the length and breadth of the earth in search of her daughter, the crops withered and it became perpetual winter. At length Hades was persuaded to surrender Persephone for one half of every year; the spring and summer seasons when flowers bloom and the earth bears fruit once more. The half year that Persephone spends in the Underworld as Hades' queen coincides with the barren season.

The Roman goddess Prosperina was taken by Pluto to be his wife in the Underworld. Her mother Ceres was the goddess of nature and crops, so in her despair at losing her daughter all the plants on Earth began to die. With them, so did humans. Eventually Jupiter declared that Ceres must stop her mourning but she would not so Jupiter told Pluto to give back Prosperina. If anyone ever ate the food of the Underworld they had to stay there for ever and Prosperina knew this but she had become so hungry that she had eaten six pomegranate seeds, and Pluto said she had to stay. But the Earth was dying so Jupiter declared that Prosperina would have to spend one month a year in the Underworld for every seed she had eaten.

Therefore winter months when most plants die and the world turns cold is when Prosperina must spend her time in the Underworld and her mother is missing her, but in summer Ceres rejoices at the return of her daughter.

The goddess of harvest Demeter had a daughter called Persephone. In mythology the lord of the underworld Hades kidnapped her down to the underworld to make her his wife. During her absence Demeter was grieving at her lost that all the crops etc. on earth died and mortals were going hungry. Zeus couldn't ignore the cries of the people anymore and arranged for Hades to give Persephone back to Demeter. But during her stay Persephone had eaten six pomegranate seeds. If one eats the food of the dead, then they are trapped in the underworld. Zeus struck a deal with Hades. Persephone would stay in the underworld fo six months and then return to her mother for six months as well. The cycle would continue every year and so the seasons would change every time Persephone left and returned.
