Earthquakes are caused by tectonic plate movements under the crust of the earth.

The earth is made up of many 'plates' which move around due to the earths core moving and these plates shift slightly, when the plates rub against each other that is how earthquakes / volcanoes / mountains are caused.

well done on your grammar :)
