What are the side effects to blood transfusion recipient?
Chemotherapy, radiation and some diseases such as aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) can cause unsafe low levels of blood cells. Using donated blood, transfusions are a way to temporarily increase the number of blood cells. There are different types of blood transfusions to match the types of blood cells a patient may need.
Many patients get blood transfusions after a bone marrow or cord blood transplant. These could be transfusions of red blood cells, platelets, or rarely, white blood cells.
- Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body.
- White blood cells help fight infection.
- Platelets help control bleeding.
Talk with your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about blood transfusions.
There are risks associated with receiving a blood transfusion, and these must be balanced against the benefit which is expected. The most common adverse reaction to a blood transfusion is a febrile non-hemolytic transfusion reaction, which consists of a fever which resolves on its own and causes no lasting problems or side effects. Hemolytic reactions include chills, headache, backache, dyspnea, cyanosis, chest pain, tachycardia and hypotension.
Normal saline is the same as our body which is 0.9% saline. Serious side effects can occur if it did not have the same salt content as our body and in blood transfusions the red blood cells could burst open resulting in a very ill patient and even death. Saline is know as sodium chloride or symbolized as NaCl.
Side effects are usually those maladies that are unintended. In other words, a drug has certain effects that are intended to be felt, and then there are other effects that are not intended and are usually not positive. For instance, beta blockers for high blood pressure can cause urinary retention. The intended effect is to lower blood pressure, the side effect is the problem urinating.
Im no doctor but like to share my experience. My 17 year daughter is diagnosed with ITP. Last year she experienced her first blood transfussion. The adverse effect were severe. She was shiverring and almost lost conciousness. Rushed to ICU to be stabalized. 3 hours later the doctors tried a 2nd attempt and everything was smooths ailing...no side effects. Just recently, she had to go through another platelet tarnsfussion due to a fever which caused…
It is probably impossible to know how many Witnesses have, or have not, died as a result of refusing a transfusion of whole blood or its four main components, as these statistics are difficult to collate worldwide. As a side note, the issue of whether death ensues from a transfusion refusal is not the primary concern from a Jehovah's Witness viewpoint anyway. Witnesses believe that it is more important to follow the lead of their…
There are multiple potential side effects of treating a dog for a heartworm infection - blood clots in the lungs, blood clots throughout the major blood vessels, allergic shock are the biggest concerns. In contrast, giving your dog heartworm preventative (such as HeartGard) has very few side effects and is very safe.
They may. Does not mean they will. There are several different medications for high blood pressure, and they can affect different people in different ways. if you are taking blood pressure medications, and it is interfering with erections, talk to your doctor about it. It IS important, and you will NOT be the first person to bring this up with your doctor. Your doctor may change your medications, the dosage, etc. Do not simply quit…
