I had a '99 cabrio that had a bad fuel pump. because the fuel pump is an electrical motor, and from my experience, if the pump is bad the engine won't start at all. I had gunk in my gas tank that seized up the motor quite easily. If you have problems with acceleration or maintaining high r.p.m.s, or if the engine sputters or has poor power, you might have a clogged fuel filter.
The fuel pump is located in the gas tank. You will need to drain the gas tank in order to access the fuel pump.
