A certified nursing assistant is a licensed nursing professional who works directly under a registered nurse or physician. Certified nursing assistants provide care for individuals who are disabled, physically injured and mentally ill. The specific duties of a nursing assistant vary per employer. Nursing assistants may be responsible for drawing a patient's blood, taking vitals, administering medication under the direction of a physician and changing patients' bed pans, clothes and linen. A certified nursing assistant may work in a hospital, nursing facility or private physician's office. Certified nursing assistants must pass a state examination to receive certification and to be listed as a CNA in their state.Education RequirementsIndividuals interested in a career as a certified nursing assistant can take educational courses at a technical school, vocational school or community college. Courses offered in a nursing assistant program typically cover subjects on anatomy and physiology, nutrition, infectious diseases and infection control. Aspiring nursing assistants also take classes in communication. Effectively communicating with patients and other medical staff is an important aspect of the job. Nursing assistants who desire to become certified must meet federal and state government requirements, which include the completion of state-approved courses and passing an examination.Job OutlookThe job outlook for certified nursing assistants remains positive for the foreseeable future. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, an 18 percent increase in certified nursing assistant jobs is expected through 2018. An increase in the number of senior patients needing long-term care, changes in the health care industry and technological advances are all factors that contribute to the increase in jobs. Although certified nursing assistant jobs will increase, the growth is not as fast as other health care occupations. Individuals will find most certified nursing assistant jobs in nursing facilities and hospitals.SalarySpecific wages for nursing assistants depend on geographical location and employment setting. The average salary for a certified nursing assistant is $25,140. The top 10 percent earned an average salary of $34,580, while the bottom 10 percent earned an average salary of $17,790. The answer depends on laws governing nursing in your state. For instance, in New York, only a licensed health care professional can give insulin. PCAs, CNAs, and medical assistants may not. Contact your state Board of Nursing for information specific to your situation.

1. Home Health In some states, CNAs qualify for several home health jobs. Some states will also require a CHHA certificate but many agencies seek those with CNA licenses for jobs which do not require the CHHA certification. Nursing assistants in home health will either live with a patient at their home or make several visits during the week. Help with dressing, bathing, eating and medications is often required. In addition to this, nursing assistants may be required to drive the patient to appointments, shop for groceries or help with laundry and house cleaning. 2. Hospice Hospice is similar to home health, except Hospice patients are terminally ill with little time left to live. Nursing assistants will need to provide extensive help, compassion and support to these patients. When facing death many patients may display anger; this type of work is very difficult but can be rewarding for the right person. Coping with constant death is also a requirement. 3. Nursing & Retirement Homes The most popular places that hire nursing assistants are nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Nursing homes require more extensive care of residents, as many are completely immobile and must be manually lifted, turned and cleaned. Many residents must also be fed and bathed. Assisted living facilities house more ambulatory residents; usually nursing assistants in these facilities must only provide light assistance as needed. 4. Hospitals Nursing assistants employed in hospitals may work in a variety of areas. Most of the duties performed in hospitals will include assisting patients with toileting, dressing, bathing and transportation. Almost all nursing assistants must check each patient’s vital signs frequently; most nursing assistants note that this activity is the most predominant task they are assigned. 5. Doctor’s Office Doctors will often hire a nursing assistant to help with office work and set-up of patient rooms. The nursing assistant will be responsible for taking vital signs of patients, directing them where to go and often assisting as needed for other exams the doctor may need help in performing. In smaller offices the nursing assistant may be required to help with answering phones, billing, scheduling appointments, filing and several other secretarial duties.
