Generally filtering drinking water involves removing smaller and smaller particles in succession. The first stage is to remove large debris by a coarse screen, the smaller heavier sediments are allowed to fall out in a settling area or pond, the water id then passed though a filter medium (either a fabric or aggregate bed of sand and other solids. This leaves only colloidal material in the water. The colloids are precipitated out with an agent like aluminum hydroxide then filtered out in a secondary filter medium. Dissolved organic may be removed by passing the particulate free water through an activated carbon bed.
