1st you open the airway by putting one hand on the forehead and 2-3 fingers underneath the chin and lift up into a neutral position. Then Give 30 chest compressions. Remember,You do not use the palm of your hand, you use 2-3 fingers. then after that you give 2 rescue breaths.Complete this 5 times. This should take about 2 minutes. Trust me on this. I was certified. Hoped it helped! 8)

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation for an infant follows the same ratio of 30:2 but there are a few key differences. Instead of using both hands, press down on the infants chest using two fingers.

When giving rescue breaths, do not tilt the infants head back. It should be placed in a neutral position as to not overstretch the trachea. Cover your mouth over the babies nose and mouth and apply a gentle breath.

When starting with CPR for an infant, it is advisable to begin with two rescue breaths. This is because it is more likely the infant has an airway or breathing problem rather than a cardiac one.

The American Red Cross is the governing body on CPR and the rules and regulations to successfully carry out this procedure. The amount of force for chest compressions for an infant is far less than for that of an adult. 1/2 to 1 inch is the maximum the chest should be compressed for an infant. By no means should a full hand be used, only 3 fingers should be used for chest compressions. At a pace of 100 compressions per minute, the chest should be compressed.

Steps to perform infant CPR are as follows:

  1. Verify the scene is safe
  2. Flick the foot and shout to determine if the infant is unconscious
  3. If unconscious, have someone call 911 if possible
  4. Tip head slightly and determine if infant is breathing (10 seconds maximum)
  5. If not breathing, give 2 breaths (more like puffs)
  6. Check pulse at brachial artery (10 seconds maximum)
  7. If no pulse, give 30 chest compressions. Use 2 or 3 fingers on the sternum, just below a nipple line across the sternum
  8. Give 2 breaths
  9. Repeat 5 times; check breathing and pulse again for a maximum of 10 seconds
  10. Call 911 now if nobody called
  11. Repeat compressions and breaths, 5 cycles, breathing and pulse check until help arrives or someone can take over
