  1. Bring about 3 inches of water to a boil in a saucepan. Mix 1/3 cup gum base, 1/4 tsp. of citric acid, 2 tbsp. of corn syrup and 1 tsp. of glycerin in a glass bowl. Put the bowl over the saucepan. Turn the heat down so the water is at a simmer.

  2. Heat the mixture until it reaches a gooey consistency. Take the mixture off of the heat and add five or six drops of candy flavoring.

  3. Pour 1/2 cup of powdered sugar onto a dry working surface. Create a volcano shape with a crater in the center. Pour the flavored mixture into the volcano crater.

4. Slowly stir the powdered sugar into the mixture until you've incorporated all of the sugar. Knead the mixture until the gum is smooth and firm, adding powdered sugar if it gets sticky .

5. Roll the gum into a rope, and cut it into 1-inch pieces. Roll the pieces into balls, and lay them on a baking sheet covered in wax paper.

6. To make the hard candy shell, remove the water from the saucepan and add 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup light corn syrup and 1/4 cup water to the saucepan. Apply a medium-high heat to the saucepan and stir until the sugar dissolves.

7. When the mixture comes to a boil, insert the candy thermometer and stop stirring. Let the mixture reach 295 degrees Fahrenheit and remove it from the heat.

8. Stir in 3/4 tsp. of candy flavoring. Pour the mixture over the gumballs and let them cool completely before eating.
