You are speaking about the RAM ? Just remove your old RAM from the slot. Buy a 1 GB RAM ( be carefull that your new RAM should be same frequency (FSB) that is supported by your motherboard and same size ( i.e. SD, DDR, or DDR1, or DDR2, or even now DDR3 or other ).
1GB has way more memory. 1GB is 1000 MB. so 512 MB is about half of 1GB
What memory your motherboard can use will depend entirely on your motherboard. There is no way for someone to answer a generic question like this.I can add a personal note that I did upgrade my dad's laptop to contain one 1GB stick as well as the 512MB it came with. Of course, I have no idea what motherboard it has (or even what manufacturer it is).

I think I am answering this correctly. Memory is also called RAM or DDRAM, SDRAM etc. 512MB of memory is 512MB of memory. If you check the back of your software cases you will notice that it gives you the system minimum and recommended for memory required. Example windows 7 recommends 1GB of system memory minimum to install and run.
