I'm not sure if there are variations by year, but in my 2003 Ion 1 there are speakers in the front doors where the speaker grills are, and 2 in the rear deck behind the back seats. To get to those you have to put the seats down and remove the carpetting back there that is held in place by about 6 pins. Getting to the door speakers is still a bit of a mystery to me, because I haven't found out how to remove the door panels.
To get the door panel off there is a screw in the door handles, where you pull to close your door from the inside, there is a little rubber pad you have to take off inside the handles and its under that. Im going to replace my speaker next week and will let you know what kind it is.
