Queen Elizabeth I was also her own master. She was very proud of being descended from Henry VIII and was good at putting people at their places and reminding them of who the boss is. One of the chiefest sources of her strength and the peace of her reign emanated from her irresistible ability to be evasive and not committ easily. She used her suitors to further the interests of England by leaving them hanging as long as she could.
