Vitamins are nutrients that are normally found in food. In theory, eating a balanced diet gives you all the nutrients you need. However, because of varying factors like soil depletion in farmlands, storage and cooking methods, digestive issues, etc., we sometimes do not get all the nutrients we need from our food.

Symptoms This can lead to various deficiencies of chemicals in our bodies, which can, in turn, cause other problems such as organ malfunctions, anemia, failure to build or maintain strong bones, and a variety of others depending on which factors are missing. When the missing nutrients are vitamins, we are said to suffer from a vitamin deficiency.

There are a variety of opinions about how many vitamins we need, and how much we need to supplement our normal diets. Since most vitamins are relatively harmless, it would seem that taking a good multivitamin every day with a meal, could be helpful while, at the same time, causing no harm. Your physician may advise you to take individual supplements to treat specific conditions.

Vitamin supplements should always be taken when taking antibiotics, as the medication affects the bacteria in our gut that manufacture some of the vitamins and other nutrients we need to stay healthy and fight off infection.

  • Vitamin D is an extremely important vitamin. First and foremost, Vitamin D allows the body retain and use Calcium taken in from the diet. A Vitamin D deficiency can keep the body from retaining Calcium which can cause rickets, a disease where the body tissue doesn't properly mineralize, leading to softer bones and skeletal deformations. Symptoms of bone pain and muscle weakness can be signs that you may be Vitamin D deficient. Studies show that low levels of Vitamin D can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, decrease cognitive ability in older adults, and increase risk of getting cancer.
  • Vitamin D is naturally produced by the body when exposed to sunlight. It is also found naturally in some fish, fish oils, egg yolks, fortified milk and grains.

Deficiency means that you don't have enough of something. A vitamin deficiency means your body doesn't have enough of one or more vitamins that it needs to survive.

For example, you might have cracking at the corners of your mouth. This can be a sign of iron, zinc, and B-vitamin (niacin, riboflavin, and B12) deficiency, or that you’re not getting enough protein. Good dietary sources of these nutrients include organic free-range poultry and eggs, wild-caught Alaskan salmon, oysters, and clams (if you can be sure they are harvested from non-polluted waters), Swiss chard, and tahini.

Because iron absorption is enhanced by vitamin C, be sure your diet also includes plenty of vitamin C-rich veggies like broccoli, red bell peppers, kale, and cauliflower.Another symptom of vitamin deficiency might be a red, scaly rash (especially on your face). This can be a sign of biotin (vitamin B7) deficiency. Your body needs biotin for metabolizing fats, carbohydrates, and amino acids, but it’s most well-known for its role in strengthening your hair and nails. Egg yolks from organic, free-range eggs are one of the best sources of biotin.
