Trench foot is a painful medical condition caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to damp, unsanitary, and cold conditions. The condition was first highlighted in WW1, when soldiers in the trenches had their boots/feet immersion in cold water or mud for a long time. The problem starts with the affected feet becoming numb, following this they turn red or blue as a result of poor blood supply. Also the feet may begin to have a decaying odor caused by the early stages of tissue death setting in and as the condition worsens, feet may also begin to swell.
Advanced trench foot often involves blisters and open sores, which lead to fungal infections and if left untreated, trench foot usually results in gangrene, which can cause the need for amputation. Treated properly a complete recovery is normal, though severe short-term pain may occur when feeling returns.
