Premature labor has the same symptoms or signs of any labor. Often a nagging back ache is the only sign, other women may have lower abdominal cramps and pressure.

Fluid leaking or gushing from the vagina, regular time-able contractions, a feeling of tightness without real pain - where you can feel your uterus (tummy) feel as hard as a rock, soften and harden again.

Feeling pressure on your bladder or rectum (feeling like you have to go to the bathroom), diarrhea, bloody show or just feeling very low pressure against your vagina or perineum.

If you are having time-able contractions without leaking fluid - drink a large quantity of liquids - juice, water, non caffeinated soda. (Being dehydrated or having low blood sugar, can cause contractions) Change activities, if you are up on your feet, lie down with your feet up - sit and relax. But get off your feet.

If this does not make the symptoms go away (and stay away) or you have had prior premature contractions / childbirth, follow your doctors instructions for early labor.

If you had a large gush of fluid or constant leak of fluid with or without the other signs or if you are having any of the symptoms with enough pain that you cannot sleep through the contractions - call your doctor ASAP! Note the color of the leaking fluid. It should be clear or maybe pinkish, note if there is bright red blood or green tinged waters as this maybe a sign of fetal distress.

Always call your doctor or midwife if you even suspect early labor.

If the fetus's heartbeat is best heard below the level of the mother's navel, it is likely to be positioned head first. On the other hand, if the heartbeat is best heard above the level of the navel, it is likely to be breech.
