If you are asking about Radon, there aren't any sypmtoms. You just develop some form of lung cancer. The chances are low, maybe three in 10,000 people exposed per year, and epidemiology can't really separate those cancers from normal cancer occurances unless the number of people studied is huge. Just have a whole house Radon test done and have them put one test kit or meter under a glass or metal bowl to see how much the granite is contributing to the home's radon. If you are asking about heavy metal posioning, look up the various heavy metals on the internet. Arsenic, polonium, beryilium, chromium, and lead are some of the more common toxic heavy metals found in granite. One warning, other than geologists studying average local granites, there has been no research on what is in commercially sold granites. Right now, you can sell any granite regardless of it's toxicity or radiation levels. Sad business. For more info, use the link below. We have more info and experts on this subject than anyone else. You don't really expect the stone industry to study this do you?

How can I tell if my granite counter top is emitting radiation?

You need to go to the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists to have it tested. These tests coast between 100 to 300 dollars.

Where is radon most commonly found on earth?

In granite rock

Does coldstone ice cream check granite of radon?

This is not necessary as the granite is only a small piece and is in a well ventilated area. You would need several tons of granite to emit enough radon to be concerned about and it would have to be in an enclosed area with little ventilation.

Is there radon in microwave ovens?

No, radon is a naturally occurring radioactive element present in materials containing uranium and thorium (both of which are also radioactive). The most likely source of radon in a building is granite, either in the bedrock underground, in granite countertops and tabletops, granite fireplaces, etc. A microwave cooker is made of metal and plastics and contains no radioactive materials.

Choosing A Granite Counter Top?

Trying to decide whether or not to use granite counter tops in your kitchen? Granite is really popular right now, but that doesn’t necessarily make it the best option for everyone’s kitchen remodel. Before you go out and choose a granite slab for your counter it is important to understand the benefits and problems associated with using granite in your kitchen. Read on for information about why granite may or may not work for you and how to choose the right slab of granite if you decide to use the material. Positives of Granite Several properties of granite make it great for using as a kitchen counter top. Because the stone is non-porous, it won’t catch bacteria like some other materials you might use for a counter. Granite is also easy to clean, and it comes in a wide variety of colors that can help it look good with almost any color scheme. Granite has a great luxury feel due to the variety and uniqueness in the stone, and it doesn’t loose color as it gets older. Granite is great for using in the kitchen because it is difficult to scratch or damage with heat, and using soap and water won’t hurt it at all. Problems with Granite Unfortunately, while there are many positives to using granite for your kitchen counter, there are some negatives associated with the stone as well. Many people who choose granite for their counter tops choose a slab based on beautiful veining that helps the stone look unique and interesting even though this veining can make the stone fragile and prone to cracks. Granite does cost quite a bit, and the uniqueness of an individual piece makes it impossible to replace part of a counter with something that will match. One lesser known problem that some granite may have is actually a health risk. Most granite is just fine, but some granite that tends to be in the red set of shades may actually emit a little bit of Radon, a gas that causes cancer. It is important to weigh the pros and cons of granite counter tops when you plan the remodel for your kitchen. If you decide to go with granite or granite overlay for your counter, consider a piece in a cool color with as little veining as possible.

Does granite emit radon?

No, most granite has between 10 and 20 ppm of uranium, which decays into Radon eventually. Some granite in consumer's home has been found to have 270ppm, even 1,130 ppm of uranium along with the other elements in the radiation decay chain. Can anyone do a radon test on granite in Los Angeles?

What disease does granite cause?

Granite is a source of radiation; radon gas can be released from granite if it is drilled into. It is possible that people living on granite could have a higher cancer risk, but I don't think any real proof has been shown to exist.

What symptoms do people experience if affected by too much radon?

The Word is: There are no symptoms. The excess exposure ultimately manifests as lung cancer, with no symptoms along the way.

What equipment would I need for radon testing?

You need a radon detector to perform radon testing. Essentially it's a geiger counter. Radon is radioactive and you locate it just the same way. Many radon alarms are available for areas where Radon is a problem. You would need a radon detector for radon testing. You can purchase one from amazon.com for $130 shipped. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000CEAY64

Does radon gas give off alpha radiation?

Yes it does. By the time a radon nucleus has decayed to a stable lead nucleus 6 alpha particles have been emitted. These are dangerous to health. For this reason, basements which are in high radon areas should be positively vented to the outside. Note. care should be taken with decorative granite counter-tops. Some of these cause radon levels in the kitchen which are far above the safe limit.
